Tchaikovsky's great romantic piano trio was composed in Rome in the winter of 1881/82. Tchaikovsky named the occasion for the composition in a pathetic dedication "In memory of a great artist". The person honored was the pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, the founder of the Moscow Conservatory, where Tchaikovsky had been appointed in 1866. Rubinstein died unexpectedly in the spring of 1881. The funeral service in Paris made such a shattering impression on Tchaikovsky that, after much hesitation, he forced himself to compose a piano trio. With a remarkable sense of balance, the Trio Karénine combines the work with two slow movements.
