This 3 CD set presents the collaboration between Kurt Masur and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in three of their unique Beethoven performances from the 1980s. The centerpiece is the recording of the 9th Symphony, which was made on the occasion of the opening concert of the new Gewandhaus in Leipzig on October 8, 1981. It was mainly thanks to the efforts of Kurt Masur, director of the orchestra from 1970, that a new, "third" Gewandhaus was built in the center of the city on Augustusplatz after the Second World War. The opening concert of the new Gewandhaus on October 8, 1981 marked the beginning of a new era for the orchestra under its then chief conductor. Also included are the Mass in D major op. 123 "Missa solemnis" and the Violin Concerto in D major op. 61.
