Dmitri Shostakovich is unquestionably one of the great composers of the 20th century and left behind masterpieces in every genre - from symphonies to opera, film and light music, concertos and, of course, chamber music. This collection offers an excellent overview of his contributions to this genre. It includes some of his masterpieces such as Rudolf Barschai's Chamber Symphony (an arrangement of String Quartet No. 8), String Quartet No. 1 and Piano Quintet, but also lesser-known gems and rarely performed works for two pianos, such as the short, witty Tarantella or the dramatic, cinematic Concertino. The collection is rounded off by Alfred Schnittke's homage to the master, the Prelude in memoriam Dmitri Shostakovich.
