Kati Debretzeni (violin)
The English Baroque Soloists, Sir John Eliot Gardiner
Sir John Eliot Gardiner presents a long-awaited, dazzling and insightful recording of the Violin Concertos with leader and soloist, Kati Debretzeni. Debretzeni also presents her own arrangement and world-premiere recording of the harpsichord concerto BWV 1053, published by Fountayne Editions.
Now at last here she is in the Bach concertos that have surely been waiting for her...Add to that John Eliot Gardiner’s typically firm-handed elucidatory approach to articulation and the result is music-making full of detail and interest.
Coupling considerations aside, this recording is up there with the best.
The bonuses here are transcriptions, by Debretzeni and Wilfried Fischer, of two well-known keyboard concertos, which may or may not be “authentic”, but sound effortlessly violinistic as performed by these immaculate Bach players.
Debretzeni’s joyful, spirited playing, precise but free, gives endless pleasure.
[Debretzeni’s] tone is consistently impressive... For all the bustle, there is composure too and plenty of colour – instances where the conversation is visited by sudden rushes of sound and obvious smiles. Much to savour.
