Les Ambassadeurs ~ La Grande Écurie, Alexis Kossenko
Under the direction of Alexis Kossenko, the young ensemble Les Ambassadeurs and La Grande Écurie et La Chambre du Roy, founded in 1966 by Jean-Claude Malgoire, have become one orchestra. Together they are beginning a cycle of Mendelssohn's orchestral works on period instruments and in the instrumentations of the period in which they were composed. In doing so, they concentrate on rarely heard versions. For Mendelssohn, a perfectionist, frequently revised his own works. The Symphonies No. 4, the "Italian" (in the 1834 version) and No. 5, the "Reformation Symphony", chronologically the 3rd and 2nd Symphonies, form the prelude.
Steeped in the Baroque, Kossenko and his responsive forces seem to take naturally to Mendelssohn...the smallish forces, tilting the balance towards woodwind and brass, allow for an ideal transparency of texture in a sympathetic acoustic.
