As part of the Britten-Pears Collection, DECCA is releasing four historically and musically significant film documents of the artistic collaboration between Benjamin Britten and Sir Peter Pears from the BBC archives. None of these films have been released commercially before. Benjamin Britten not only made headlines as a composer, he was also one of the most sensitive conductors of Mozart's works. This BBC recording of Idomeneo, produced in color in 1969, is probably the first picture production of the then almost unknown work. Bejamin Britten produced his own edition of the score for the performance. The title role is sung by Sir Peter Pears (his only film recording as Idomeneo), the cast is completed by Heather Harper and Robert Tear.
