Ashley Solomon and the Ensemble Florilegium perform a selection of Telemann's cantatas and double concertos together with violinist Rachel Podger, soprano Elizabeth Watts and recorder player Hannah Parry. The cantata Ino, whose text is based on an episode from Ovid's Metamorphoses, is a highly dramatic, almost theatrical work in which a single soprano voice carries the entire plot. The two double concertos on this recording demonstrate Telemann's mastery of tone color and scoring. His unconventional, original approach to concerto form is particularly evident in the five-movement concerto for flute and violin. The concerto for recorder and transverse flute, on the other hand, is one of his most popular instrumental works and is a shining example of his preference for unusual instrumental combinations.
