A pianist whose career was cut tragically short, the “gentle giant” John Ogdon was a remarkable English virtuoso chiefly associated with Romantic and 20th-century repertoire. But he was also praised for the classical sense of proportion and balance of his Beethoven playing, such as his sought-after recording of the “Hammerklavier” Sonata, never before issued on CD and now coupled with pieces by Nielsen from the same 1967 London sessions.
