''There are composers who conduct and conductors who compose, and like Otto Klemperer and Wilhelm Furtwängler, Sergiu Celibidache, who died in 1996, belonged in the second category. Celibidache was notorious for his extreme rehearsal demands, resulting in highly polished textures and very precise phrasing in performance. Unsurprisingly, his own music sets great store by its colour and textural imagination. Der Taschengarten appears to have been composed in the 1970s (the documentation with the CD is vague, but this studio recording was made in 1979) and is a suite of 13 movements, complete with Celibidache's own fairy-tale scenario, intended as a children's entertainment. The music is skilled (there are echoes of Debussy, Ravel, Weill and also perhaps Hindemith) but ultimately not distinctive. Admirers and completists will want to hear it.'' The Guardian
