Andreas Staier, Roel Dieltiens
From the mid-teens of the 19th century until the end of his life, Beethoven experimented incessantly with the forms handed down by Haydn and Mozart. His last two sonatas for piano and violoncello bear witness to this creative work, which opened up many new avenues - as do his last bagatelles, which are both unfathomable and innovative. Andreas Staier and Roel Dieltiens create a clever connection between the two groups of works and unite expressiveness and historically informed playing practice in their interpretations.
Devotees of Beethoven on period instruments will need no further encouragement. But sceptics, too, could do a lot worse than start here.
