Lydia Steier's Salzburg "Magic Flute" with Karl-Maria Brandauer as narrator
Rarely has Mozart's "The Magic Flute" been more colorful and imaginative than in 2018 at the Salzburg Festival by Lydia Steier. With a superb cast including Matthias Goerne, Albina Shagimurotava and Christiane Karg, Steier also came up with a special treat and created a role as narrator for none other than Klaus Maria Brandauer, who classifies and whimsically comments on the opera's opaque and Janus-faced libretto. Quite controversial, this production was one of the most acclaimed new opera productions last year.
