Tavener Conducts Tavener traces Cappella Nova's professional and personal association with the famous composer Sir John Tavener under the direction of his cousin Alan Tavener.
Tavener wrote some of the finest choral music of the 20th century; works such as 'The Whale' and 'The Song for Athena', which was sung at the funeral of Princess Diana, ensured that he remained one of the most popular contemporary composers until his death in 2013. This recording includes works from the choir's entire 25-year collaboration complemented by choruses from the first piece Tavener ever wrote for Cappella Nova: Resurrection.
It also includes nine first recordings, including "A Buddhist Miniature", commissioned to celebrate Cappella Nova's thirtieth anniversary in 2012, "A Cradle Song" and "O that we were there!" A brand new commission in memory of Tavener by his student and friend Ivan Moody, O isplendour, will also be premiered here.
Ikon of the Nativity and Tavener's intriguing and atmospheric Christmas anthem "The Lamb" lend a contemporary, seasonal flair to the program with its beautiful simplicity and lush harmonies.

Reviews
"The comparatively small line-up of Cappella Nova is rich and wonderfully hazy at the edges, but still achieves enough clarity to accomplish the precision work of The Lamb and Two Hadiths." Gramophone
