The Vienna State Opera presents a Wagner classic in a production by the duo Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito, who turn Lohengrin into a thriller with a twist. The conductor is Christian Thielemann, who more than lives up to his reputation as a Wagner expert par excellence. On stage, David Butt Philip as the eponymous Lohengrin is a "heroic tenor with radiance and stamina" (Kleine Zeitung), while Malin Byström portrays Elsa, who is perhaps not as innocent as the libretto suggests, and convinces with "dramatic furor" (Der Standard).
