After recording albums as co-leader with John Coltrane and Albert Ayler, Don Cherry released his first real solo album in 1965 with "Complete Communion" his first real solo album on Blue Note. Together with the Argentinian saxophonist Gato Barbieri, whom Cherry had discovered in Rome, bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Ed Blackwell, the cornetist presented two suites on "Complete Communion", each of which filled an album side. The German musicologist and saxophonist Ekkehard Jost described Don Cherry's music as an "alternative to both the athematic improvisations and the monothematic pieces" that had previously characterized free jazz.
