Helmut Lachenmann, jubilarian of the music year 2025, has composed milestones in modern music history. Sir Simon Rattle and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks will be performing some of these exceptional works. In his tuba concerto Harmonica, Helmut Lachenmann explores the boundaries of sound - with music between eruption and silence that eludes all socially preformed listening expectations in a "strictly constructed refusal" (Lachenmann) and deliberate refraction of the familiar: a unbroken appeal to the listener's self-perception. The soloist is Stefan Tischler, principal tuba of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. The live recording with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle was made in March 2025. The "reverse side" of sound, its suppressed and "unwelcome" parts, is the subject of Klangschatten - mein Saitenspiel by Helmut Lachenmann. The spectrum here ranges from toneless or stifled sounds to differently colored noise and clear tones. Lachenmann himself described the piece as an "offer of expressive intensity that reflects the bourgeois longing for beauty and wants to fulfill it, i.e. overcome it". The work was performed with the Symphonieorchester des Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Matthias Herrmann on May 23, 2025 in the Herkulessaal of the Residenz in Munich.
