Brahms' 'Vier ernste Gesänge', written in memory of Clara Schumann, contrasts melancholy with transcendence, while songs such as 'Sehnsucht' and 'Die Trauernde' evoke poignant pain and unresolved longing.

In his Goethe and Michelangelo songs, Hugo Wolf captures profound existential reflections, contrasts fame with love and weaves harmonies that reflect the complexity of human emotions. The album concludes with Wolf's Prometheus, a tour-de-force of maximum power.
