The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the most important Marian shrine in the Eternal City, is located in the heart of Baroque Rome. For centuries, it has not only housed the relics of the cradle and swaddling clothes of Jesus, but also the famous marble birth scene by Arnolfo di Cambio (1291), the first of its kind in the history of art, which earned it the title "Bethlehem of the West". in 1707, Alessandro Scarlatti was employed here as maestro di cappella. This brief appointment - it lasted just over a year - was enough to leave a deep impression on Scarlatti, especially in the repertoire for Christmas, which was celebrated with particular solemnity in the basilica. To mark the 300th anniversary of the composer's death, Giulio Prandi and Coro e Orchestra Ghislieri dedicate their fifth album for Arcana to Scarlatti's unique and magnificent music for a Roman Christmas.
