Recorded live in Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, the acclaimed Kuss Quartet - all playing Stradivarius instruments on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation - these four instrumentals are known as the ‘Paganini Quartet’, using the new Henle urtext edition.
The Kuss Quartet are renowned for their penetrating and searching performances of quartet repertoire spanning Haydn through to Birtwistle and Adés. Their Beethoven journey continues throughout this anniversary year with Beethoven performances around Europe.
The recording has an interesting postscript - French composer Bruno Mantovani wrote his sixth string quartet for the Kuss Quartet. It is based entirely on material from each Beethoven quartet and is an affectionate tribute to the great man on his 250th birthday anniversary.
