From its cradle in Venice, where Vivaldi established the formal aesthetics of the genre, the violin concerto quickly spread throughout Europe. Giuseppe Tartini, however, in nearby Padua, remained completely independent of Vivaldi's example and founded a school that reflected his own virtuoso style. The works of three Italian and one German pupil of Tartini on this CD contain noble and expressive slow movements in concertos that have absorbed the galant style and influence of Lombard symphonists such as Sammartini. Three of these can be heard in world premiere recordings.
