Ensemble Gilles Binchois (early music ensemble)
Dominique Vellard
This program focuses on the Missa pro defunctis by Carlolus d'Argenteil. This work, recorded here for the first time, is one of only a dozen surviving settings of the requiem mass from before 1550. The composer of the papal chapel in Rome, who is little known today, was a key figure in the French Renaissance and in requiem composition. His Missa stands alongside the three Lamentations du Samedi Saint by Claude de Sermisy, the composer of the French Chapelle royale under François I, and the Salve Regina by Jehan Barra. The Ensemble Gilles Binchois sheds light on a generation of composers who are often overlooked and who immediately followed Josquin des Prés.
