For pianist Yunchan Lim, Bach's Goldberg Variations are "a journey through life in music", as his deeply personal interpretation shows.
It is April 25, 2025, and the sold-out Carnegie Hall is eagerly awaiting the return of 21-year-old Yunchan Lim, who will play Bach's Goldberg Variations - a musical moment that will make history.
Lim's interpretation of the Goldberg Variations has delighted audiences and critics worldwide. The Guardian praised his performance of the piece at Wigmore Hall for its 'youthful vibrancy with interpretative maturity', and the Financial Times highlighted his 'intellectual precision, baroque elegance, expressive balance and virtuosic brilliance'. Internationally, El País reports that it is 'considered by many to be the best version of this work at present'.
Since becoming the youngest ever winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022 at the age of 18, where his rousing performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 moved conductor Marin Alsop to tears, Lim's rise has been unstoppable. With his Goldberg Variations, he is now sending out a clear signal: he has reached the top.
