Scriabin, the creator of sound worlds, initially oriented himself on Chopin and Liszt, and later on Wagner, before developing his own atonal compositional technique. The lyrical-poetic Piano Concerto clearly falls into this early phase. Jean-Philippe Collard, who plays primarily Romantic repertoire, places Scriabin's only concertante work, as well as several of his solo piano works, alongside Rimsky-Korsakov's Piano Concerto. The composer, who was almost 30 years older, had critically reviewed Scriabin's concerto before it was printed, but made only "a few corrections."
