Francesco Piemontesi, Orchestre de La Suisse Romande, Jonathan Nott
Masterpieces of the 20th century for piano and orchestraThe Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and its musical and artistic director Jonathan Nott, together with star pianist Francesco Piemontesi, continue their acclaimed series of 20th century masterworks on PENTATONE, presenting piano concertos by Ravel and Schoenberg alongside Messiaen's Oiseaux exotiques. Each of these composers redefined 20th century music in very personal ways, and the works recorded here have a connection to the United States that one might not immediately expect from these European master composers. While the piano concertos of Ravel and Schoenberg represent the 20th century's most original and colorful contributions to the genre, Messiaen uses similar scoring to express his deep reverence for nature in Oiseaux exotiques. These challenging and versatile scores fit Piemontesi, Nott and the orchestra like a glove.
You have to envy the citizens of Geneva...Add a pianist in Franceso Piemontesi’s class, and here are stellar interpretations of three very different concerto-type works, ordered into a journey from easier listening to (notionally at least) more difficult.
In an era of increasingly fussy and indulgent Ravel G major Concerto performances, the direct, forthright and classically orientated approach that pianist Francesco Piemontesi and conductor Jonathan Nott favour in the first two movements refreshes.
In theory this combination of pieces might seem like a somewhat eclectic grouping, and yet in practice it works beautifully, all held together by Piemontesi's impeccable solo contributions and the authoritative guiding hand of Nott at the helm.
What really pulls the crazy trio together – well, two and a half of them – is the opportunity for the classy Swiss pianist Francesco Piemontesi to be winningly propulsive, nimble and precise. The Ravel performance is especially dazzling, with gorgeously polished contributions from the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under the gifted European-based British conductor, Jonathan Nott.
