"Job" was composed in 1848 and was Loewe's twelfth oratorio. In order to understand the context of the work and Loewe's oratorio style in general, it is important to know that Mendelssohn had died a year earlier. He had already published his important oratorios "Paulus" (1836) and "Elijah" (1846/47), and Loewe must have been familiar with them. Telschow's libretto for the oratorio comprised a summary of the 42 chapters of the Book of Job from the textbooks and Psalms of the Old Testament. The rediscovery and reconstruction of "Job" in Bad Dürkheim in 2001 gave rise to this recording.
