In this program, Dutch cellist Lidy Blijdorp and pianist Tobias Borsboom immerse themselves in the world of the Société Nationale de Musique with late romantic and early modern French chamber music. César Franck's Sonata for Violin and Piano was transcribed by Jules Delsart with the composer's consent. Nadia Boulanger's Trois Pièces for cello and piano, dating from 1914, are lyrical and playfully virtuosic works that testify to the extraordinary compositional talent of the master teacher. In an almost classical form and proportion, Debussy's Sonata for Cello and Piano conjures up images of nocturnal encounters. A performance of this sonata in Amsterdam in 1918 after Debussy's death inspired the Dutch composer Matthijs Vermeulen to write his own cello sonata. Shortly afterwards, Vermeulen moved to France, where he worked as a journalist and composed until after the Second World War, producing a total of seven symphonies and a large number of chamber music works. Blijdorp and Borsboom present Vermeulen's Sonata pour violoncelle et piano here.
