Ensemble Diderot, Johannes Pramsohler
For the 15th anniversary of Ensemble Diderot, and after forays into concertos and chamber music using larger forces, Johannes Pramsohler and his colleagues go back to the roots with a recording of their core repertoire: trio sonatas. Highly inventive works by Bach pupils Johann Gottlieb Goldberg and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach make for a programme in which the Diderots show their art with their trademark stylish and agile playing.
"A trio sonata ensemble in standard instrumentation does not come closer to W.F. Bach than with J.G. Goldberg'sfour sonatas for two violins and basso continuo. They deserve to take a place at the centre of the repertoire, in as much as they rank among the greatest in terms of their musical content, creative ideas, and compositional refinement."
As they have demonstrated in their earlier recordings on this label, the players bring expressive refinement to the music. Tempos are effectively judged and all is engagingly enlivened by their infectious enthusiasm and evenly balanced ensemble.
Ensemble Diderot are sympathetic advocates: I enjoy them most in the Friedemann sonata, which gives them more to play with, especially texturally (try the finale).
