Klughardt was influenced by Liszt and Wagner, but always maintained his musical independence. Schumann’s famous Piano Quintet was his model for his own Piano Quintet but he combines chamber musical thematic elaboration with orchestral sonority. His String Quintet has “Hungarian touches” and is contrapuntal. The Leipzig String Quartet put this unexplored 19th century composer in the spotlight.
