johan Helmich Roman, one of the most important composers of his home country, has been called the "father of Swedish music" and the "Swedish Handel". He spent six years in Handel's orchestra at the King's Theatre. Extensive travels through Europe brought him into contact with fellow composers in France, Italy and Germany. In London, he also met Handel and Francesco Geminiani. Roman composed around 20 assaggi for the violin (samples or studies), some of which have only survived as fragments. It is very likely that they were intended for performance. Roman evidently possessed impressive technical skills and great inventiveness.
