In addition to his work as chief conductor of the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, a collaboration that won an ECHO Klassik award in 2015, Karl-Heinz Steffens has been closely associated with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra for many years.
The latest album from this partnership focuses on well-known overtures from Gluck to Mendelssohn. Well-known pieces (such as Beethoven's famous overture "The Ruins of Athens" or Mendelssohn's perennial favorite "A Midsummer Night's Dream") are juxtaposed with less frequently heard works (such as Mozart's ballet music from "Idomeneo" or Cherubini's "Medea" overture.
Steffens and the Bamberg orchestra once again prove to be a dream team: Germany's orchestra, which is demonstrably the richest in overtones, meets the sound magician among conductors. Add to this the top class of the excellent sound engineers of the Swiss high-quality label Tudor, and the music listener's happiness is complete. Without doubt one of the most captivating new albums of the year!
