In 1806, the Rasumowsky Quartets had an almost revolutionary effect. At a time in his life when Beethoven confessed to his brothers that he was thinking of ending his life due to his incipient deafness, his Opus 59 seemed like an impulse for life, a revolt, a resurrection. The novelty of the works lay in the expansion of form and sound. Beethoven said to his outraged musicians: "I am not writing this music for you, this music is for the future." The Parisian Quatuor Elmire is the first string quartet under contract to the Scala Music label.
