"Xenakis the composer is one of the most strikingly direct voices in contemporary art, and, like all his best pieces, Pleiades can be appreciated purely on its own terms, without reference to commentaries of any kind. Each of the four movements creates its own sound-world: the minatory pounding drums of "Peaux"; the alarm bells of "Metaux"—thrilling at first, ultimately mesmeric; the eerie mechanical folk-dances of "Claviers"; and the superbly engineered chaos of "Melanges". And in Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Xenakis has found interpreters of the very highest calibre; their playing combines energy and unwavering control. Perhaps the effect would have been still more impressive in a less studio-like acoustic, but the balance of the various instrumental groups (particularly important in "Melanges") is well judged and the total sound-picture plausibly laid out. A very worthwhile issue." Gramophone
