"'Masterpiece' is not a word to be used lightly, but there is no doubt that Mark Morris's 'L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato' is just such a work." The New York Times
Handel's "Ode" is based on the two poems "L'Allegro" (Cheerfulness) and "Il Penseroso" (Melancholy) by John Milton, to which the composer and his librettist Charles Jennens added a third part, "Il Moderato" (Moderation). The Mark Morris Dance Company's ballet based on the expressive but plotless piece was created in 1988 for La Monnaie in Brussels and has since earned international acclaim. The richly colored scenes are inspired by William Blake's watercolor drawings, and Mark Morris' choreographic stock seems inexhaustible. The recording from the Teatro Real in Madrid has lost none of its original fascination 26 years after the premiere.
