In 1914 Karol Szymanowski set off for Italy, travelled to Sicily and North Africa and finally landed in London via Rome and Paris, where he met Stravinsky. Szymanowski spent most of the war years at his parents' estate, where he studied Mediterranean and Islamic history and culture in depth. The impressions of his travels in the Mediterranean and the Orient and these studies led to a phase of extreme creativity. He wrote his Third Symphony Song of the Night, based on the words of the Persian Sufi poet Mevlana Dschelaleddin Rumi, which Szymanowski completed in 1916. Because of the prominent position of the piano, Szymanowski described his Symphony No. 4 as "almost a concert". The neo-baroque character invites comparison with Stravinsky, whom Szymanowski met in London
