Rossini, at the age of 12, studied Mozart's work, that of divertimentos and serenades with the same independence of mind as his model under Colloredo in Salzburg.
Marriner returns to these six Sonatas, finally united on a single disc, their trait purity and early classicism as their innate virtuosity, refusing any added neo-baroque flourish. Simplistic music? no, juvenile and inspiring by its vitality, these sketches are as difficult to render in their obvious evidences as some 'little music of the day' signed from Haydn to Mendelssohn.
