Fernando Sor (1778-1839) was a Spanish guitarist and composer who is often referred to as the "Beethoven of the guitar" due to the sophistication and expressiveness of his music. Trained in Barcelona, Sor initially pursued a broader career in opera and instrumental music before finally turning to the guitar - an instrument that became increasingly important during his lifetime, both in concert halls and private salons. After political unrest forced him into exile, Sor settled in Paris and later in London, where he became one of the most respected guitarists and teachers of his time. His works bear witness to a masterful command of classical form, elegant melody and an unmistakable clarity that continues to captivate audiences and musicians to this day. The "Pièces de société" occupy a special place among his numerous guitar works.
Published in Paris in 1830, this collection was aimed not only at professional musicians, but also at the growing market for amateur musicians. The title itself - literally "pieces for society" - reflects its social function: short, charming works intended for intimate gatherings where the guitar was often at the center of the musical entertainment. The pieces range from graceful minuets and waltzes to lyrical romances and showcase Sor's talent for combining accessible timbres with subtle sophistication. Although technically accessible, the Pièces de société nonetheless embody Sor's characteristic elegance: balanced phrasing, inventive harmonic turns and fine voice leading. They illustrate how Sor adapted his art to the taste of the salon without compromising on musical quality.
Today, these works offer valuable insights into the guitar culture of the 19th century and are still part of the repertoire of students and professionals alike. Played by Leonardo De Marchi, one of Italy's most important guitarists.
