There are moments of sinister magic in Maestrini’s staging, which makes telling use of video…Under Donato Renzetti, the orchestra sounds gorgeous, though the singing is uneven. Valentina Farcas, her coloratura wonderfully precise, makes an excellent Rautendelein and there are strong performances from Filippo Adami’s libidinous Faun, Thomas Ghazeli’s reptilian Ondino and Agostina Smimmero as the Witch.
Debussy and Ravel linger nearby. Generally, the luminous instrumental writing impresses more than the post-veristic vocal settings. Donato Renzetti conducts an admirably evocative rendition…It is salutary to have on DVD this strikingly beautiful staging…Video technology and skilful lighting make possible the plot’s less probably elements, including the sight of the titular submerged bell…A worthwhile novelty.
