When this double LP suddenly appeared on the shelves in jazz departments in the seventies of the last century, the 'Mönch' had become rather quiet. Concerts? Not a chance! Anything new from the studio? Not at all! The attempts of various managers, festival organizers and club owners to lure Monk out of his apartment, to say a brief farewell to the TV screen in order to present new or old material on the concert stages of the world, all failed. The 1963 tour with the dates in Japan and this album compiled from it offered the normal 'concert routine', but the long-played themes spiced up with standards such as "Just A Gigolo" or "I'm Gettin' Sentimental Over You" made the audience and collectors sit up and take notice. And: weren't "Blue Monk", "Epistrophy" and "Bemsha Swing" already well-known, often heard and played standards back then?Happy memories for the Japanese fans who were able to experience May 21, 1963 live in Tokyo's Sankei Hall! Happy LP listeners who can put this re-release on their shelves in 2016! What more could a Monk fan - and who wouldn't be one? - more?Recording: May 1963 live at Sankei Hall, Tokyo
