The Harmoniemesse is Haydn's last great sacred work. It combines liturgical solemnity with a glittering orchestral setting dominated by wind instruments. In contrast, the intimate, light-filled Missa brevis Sti Joannis de Deo stands for an introspective faith. William Christie at the helm of Les Arts Florissants shows both sides of the composer with stylistic will and poetry, supported by a first-class quartet of singers.
