Marcus Miller always knew that what the old musicians told him was extremely important. And it is the weight and the meaning of the hidden words of the stories which are essential to Tales.

Using recordings of phrases spoken by some of the greatest musicians in the world, including Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Lester Young and Joe Sample, mixed with sensitivity and intuition into scintillating modern music, Miller has invented an expressive blend which is in and of itself a story.

"These stories were for me as interesting as is their music; around a year ago I realized I knew as much about my friends as I do about their music," says Marcus.

Marcus decided that this album would be like a conversation between an older musician and a younger one, "but with me in between them, translating," he added. "I want to show that even though the musicians each think his or her music is different, in fact they're really quite similar. These stories, these tales are their connections."
