What flautist today could claim to run his own orchestra? For François Devienne, it was de facto normality. As a member of the Masonic lodge Societé Olympique, he had complete creative freedom and could draw on the in-house orchestra of this music-loving lodge, which was so good that none other than Joseph Haydn composed his so-called Paris Symphonies for the ensemble.

No wonder that Devienne's own compositions for this orchestra seem to sparkle with ideas and musical ambition. Patrick Gallois is exactly the right person to bring this music back to life today. And the outstanding Swedish Chamber Orchestra is his congenial partner.
