In Sainte-Anne-d'Auray in Brittany, St. Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary, appeared to the farmer Yves Nicolazic in a dream in 1624 or 1625. With the words "God wants me to be venerated here", she asked him to build a chapel in his field. He then dug up a small, wooden statue of Anna there. The chapel was completed in 1625. In the 17th century, Carmelites built a monastery next to it. To mark the 500th anniversary, local ensembles have recorded sacred works ranging from Gregorian chant to 21st century music. The Messe brève en l'honneur de Sainte Anne by Joseph-Guy Ropartz deserves special attention.
