Nikita Magaloff was one of the great piano virtuosos of the twentieth century and still enjoys an outstanding reputation, in particular as a Chopin player. He is also considered an excellent interpreter of the works of Schumann, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, and Stravinsky. His name stands for an elegant style, French-influenced cultivated lightness and a pianistics rich in colors and nuances. Born in Russia in 1912, the pianist was a grand disciple of Liszt and Chopin in Paris, where he studied composition with Prokofiev. Magaloff had a particularly close connection with another teacher, Igor Stravinsky, who had fled to Paris with his family before the Revolution. In Stravinsky's opinion, the compatriot was a congenial interpreter of his works. One can easily hear this in Magaloff's outstanding interpretation of the Concerto for Piano and Wind instruments, which is included in this box set of original albums + bonus tracks from the years 1937 to 1962. This selection of Magaloff's art is mainly devoted to his Chopin repertoire (all of the Mazurkas, Piano Concerto No. 1, Recital) and also contains legendary recordings of the works of Schumann (Carnaval, Études symphoniques), Beethoven (Piano Concerto No. 5, Sonata Op 109), Granados (Goyescas), Liszt (Études d'exécution transcendante d'après Paganini, Sonata S. 178), as well as compositions by Haydn, Handel, and Mozart.
