Composers have long felt at home in Chicago, enjoying one of the world's finest orchestras, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO), as the centerpiece of the city's musical life. Philip Glass studied here in the 1950s, and his 11th Symphony of 2017 was first performed by the CSO in 2022. New York violinist Jessie Montgomery has been composer-in-residence since 2021 (through 2024). Max Raimi continues the orchestra's tradition of composing violists established more than a century ago. Clarinet, bassoon and double bass enter into a dialogue with mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong on three songs by Pulitzer Prize winner Lisel Mueller.
