The 14th Symphony is the penultimate symphony composed by Shostakovich. It is dedicated to Benjamin Britten and differs from all the others in its unique form: The eleven movements for soprano, bass, string orchestra and percussion are built around as many poems, which are sung in French, Russian, German and Spanish. They all evoke death in one way or another and are a response to Shostakovich's obsession with confronting death, coming to terms with it and getting used to it.
