The Passio secundum Johannem is the younger of Bach's two complete surviving passions. It depicts the eventful drama and tension-filled inevitability of the last hours of Jesus Christ "in a compressed and thoroughly ingenious manner, especially in the choruses", as Robert Schumann once said. The chamber choir and the Frauenkirche Dresden ensemble under Matthias Grünert convey this in an inimitable way, complemented by the outstanding group of internationally brilliant soloists, led by the recitative tenor of our time, Tilman Lichdi.
