Barre Phillips' Mountainscapes brings together very contrasting elements: Alongside the boisterous, energetic playing of the Surman / Phillips / Martin trio are spacious impressionistic pieces originally written for Carolyn Carlson's ballet dancers. The combination of acoustic and electronic instruments is wonderfully balanced. Recorded in March 1976, Mountainscapes was, according to Melody Maker magazine, "vast, impressive and beautiful" and became "a starting point for the shape of jazz to come".
