The American singer and actor Francis Albert Sinatra (1915-1998) was one of the most successful pop artists of the 20th century. Already as a teenager he was an ambitious singer, and after he had experienced Bing Crosby, his dream job was certain. Already in 1939 the popular swing trumpeter Harry James brought him into his newly founded Big Band.

The first records initially found modest buyers, but with his move to the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the comet-like rise of 25-year-old Sinatras began in the 1940s. "Polka Dots and Moon Beams was his first hit in April of 1940. After he could withdraw from an extremely unfavorable contract with Dorsey, he finally established himself as a solo artist from 1943. The repertoire of Sinatra in the 40s and 50s consisted of the meanwhile classical songs, which have since been immortalized as the "Great American Song Book".

Out of respect for Ella Fitzgerald, who from the 50's had great success with her albums dedicated to individual songwriters, from Cole Porter to the Gershwins, Sinatra never took up this idea - although he would have been the perfect performer, as the Sinatra versions of the greatest songs by Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, Sammy Cahn, James Van Heusen and Jerome Kern, collected here by composers and lyricists, show.

Of course, Sinatra always had the best orchestras and arrangers at his side: Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Axel Stordahl, Alec Wilder, Percy Faith, Nelson Riddle, Billy May, Gordon Jenkins and André Previn.
