Sacred music crosses the centuries with Buxtehude and Dayer!Around 1680, Dieterich Buxtehude composed "Membra Jesu Nostri", a cycle of seven cantatas that blend medieval mystical poetry with lyrical excerpts from the Old Testament to venerate the wounds of Christ. In 2021, the Swiss composer Xavier Dayer follows on from this with "Afin que le lion féroce ne l'attaque pas". He adds a modern wind quintet to the five singers and ten instrumentalists of Membra Jesu Nostri and, in his own words, questions the protective power of the artistic and contemplative gesture, in the interweaving of sounds between ancient and modern instruments and the human voice.
