“Without music life would be a mistake”, “there has never been a philosopher who has been in his essence a musician to such an extend as I am”, two quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche, indeed the most musically gifted of all philosophers.
Nietzsche was basically a self-taught musician, piano player and composer of mainly small scale works for piano or songs. Although Nietzsche was in close contact with Richard Wagner his style was never seriously influenced by that famous composer. Nietzsche’s personal style might be called escapist, curiously innocent, open, and intuitive, a mind looking for expression of feelings that could not be expressed in words.
Dutch pianist Jeroen van Veen chose a selection of mature piano works for this recording, an homage to a genius of the mind.
