Locatelli as a pioneer of Romantic virtuoso culture: the Capricci as a separate cycle
The 24 fully composed solo cadenzas of the opening and final movements of the twelve violin concertos op. 3 by Locatelli (1695-1764), the "devil's violinist" of his era, were a direct source of inspiration for another devil's violinist, Niccolò Paganini, and his "24 Capricci" around 80 years later. The Russian-Dutch violinist Igor Ruhadze, an accomplished connoisseur of virtuoso baroque music, recorded the Capricci as part of the violin concertos for the "Locatelli Edition". He was praised by the venerable Gramophone magazine for his 'breathtaking playing'. For the first time, all of Locatelli's Capricci are now appearing as a separate collection, impressively demonstrating how pioneering Locatelli's violin art was for the virtuosity of the Romantic period.
